MADE POSSIBLE BY FONDS BKVB AND STICHTING STEDENBAND MAMELODI-DELFT

UPGRADING EXTENSION 6

In 2009 I received a subsidy from fonds BKVB to do a research in South Africa in the township Mamelodi, north east of Pretoria CBD.  The research is about the problems that South Africa is facing with poverty, unemployment, housing and informal settlement. The strategy that the government used at that time to face these challenges was to give all the unemployed homeless South Africans a house and piece of land. This was not working out the way everybody hoped (24% unemployed and millions of homeless).

The new developed strategy for Mamelodi and extension 6 is about creating accessibility and opportunities that can lead to a healthier social economic environment. A small new centre connects the railway with the taxi system and works as an entrance for the whole east of Mamelodi.  The center creates accessibility, contains various facilities, formal and informal business opportunities and new housing typologies.
